November was a busy month as we had decided to make a contribution towards the Ripley Arts Centre by organizing a concert at £10 per. head to include poetry, drama and music. Having lost its grant, Ripley is strapped for cash as are so many Arts organisations . Money has to be found from as many sources as possible for repair, maintenance, staffing and general running costs. It is at Ripley that our meetings and special events are held so we were eager to help in any way we could.
The Music Room was booked with use of the piano. The kitchen was made available for the preparation of refreshments. Posters and fliers, provided by Anne Stewart, were planted in libraries, doctors’ waiting rooms, shops and anywhere else we could think of including online. Our President, Diane Chorley, liased with Bromley Youth Music Trust for performers and the date came closer.
The programme was finalized. Everyone practised. Refreshments were organized. Husbands offered to pour the wine. We wondered if we could muster a sufficient audience and never expected every chair to be filled ( well almost)
Poems were read by both readers and writers of poetry, a combination of new work from the Writers’ Group and old favourites from the readers. The drama was performed mainly by boys from St. Olave’s School with a little added input.
The violinist was Ying Lo, aged fourteen who recently took his grade 8 examination and moved the examiner to tears.
