Meeting of 8th. May 2018

The theme of the meeting was ‘Nature’. Strangely there was no Wordsworth but there was a poem by our own Isabel Bermudez, ‘The Dung Beetle’ from her latest collection ‘Sanctuary.’

Launch of ‘Sanctuary’ by Isabel Bermudez.

On a bitter day when there had been snow Isabel still had a good audience for the launch of her third collection of poems. Since then ‘Sanctuary’ has been well-reviewed,

Launch of ‘Sanctuary’ by Isabel Bermudez.

We are very happy to announce the launch of Isabel’s second full collection which was held on Saturday March 3rd. at The Wheatsheaf pub at 25 Rathbone Place, London WT1 1DG.

Sanctuary is Isabel Bermudez’s second collection, coming Sanctuary - Isabel Bermudeza year after her much acclaimed Small Disturbances.  Emma Lee described it as “a gentle, well-crafted collection that carries its weight very lightly” (London Grip 11).  And Dilys Wood wrote “the main drive here is exploring how metaphor – including landscape and birds often used with metaphorical purpose – can help clarify the subtle essence of relationships” (Artemis, 17)

Meeting on Feb. 14th. 2017

The topic was ‘Water’ and everyone managed to bring two poems with no duplications. To do justice to the range of poems read, here is the list we write to keep in the annals. John Betjeman was the most visited poet and Isabel Bermudez had one of her published poems chosen.

Poetry Reading at The Wheatsheaf, Rathbone Place Nov. 24th.

Anne Stewart, editor of Poetry p f and member of Shortlands Poetry Circle MC’d this evening of poetry at the pub where Dylan Thomas first met Caitlin, his wife to be.

The Wheatsheaf

There were six readers including Kate Miller who recently won the Seamus Heaney prize for poetry and Roisin Tierney who won the prestigious Michael Marks award for her pamphlet, Dream Endings in 2012.

Roisin now has a full collection as has our own Isabel Bermudez who was also reading among excellent company. The event was well attended.

It’s Out! The Launch Of ‘Small Disturbances’ by Isabel Bermudez

Isabel’s first full collection was well and truly launched at a well-attended event on Sat. Oct. 1st at The Blue Anchor, Hammersmith. Several members of the SPC were there to hear Isabel read in an upstairs room with views of the river.

Small Disturbances by Isabel BermudesIsabel’s publisher, David Pearman, said a few words. He reminisced about how he had first met Isabel at an event connected with Agenda poetry Magazine, describing her as ‘an interesting woman.’ Isabel subsequently sent him her manuscript which must have impressed him greatly as he had cut down his activities to publish only the work of poets already well known to him. He praised Isabel’s knack of catching the moment and getting to the kernel of things.

Isabel read just a few poems and even before she read people had her book in their hands. Simon ought to be mentioned for his amusing introduction and general bustling around to help things run smoothly. It was a great event and we are very proud of her. Many members have subsequently bought Isabel’s book with extra copies for friends.
